LIFE IS GOOD!

As you know Proctor School's theme this year is Life Is Good. The school gathered to celebrate the 10 superpowers this week at our All School Assembly. Fourth grade students teamed up to show the meaning of each superpower with posters, a slide presentation and a song, (Good Life, by Flo' rida).

Our class collaborated on the posters for Simplicity, Love and Creativity.

BIRDS OF PREY!

We learned all about birds of prey from Jim Parks and his Wingmasters!  Mr. Parks rescues injured birds of prey and usually rehabilitates them and then releases them to the wild. However, a few of the birds he has rescued are not fit to return to nature. So, he uses them to teach school kids all about the adaptations these creatures have and use to survive. We were lucky enough to see six different birds. He brought a:

 peregrine falcon, 

red-tailed hawk,

great-horned owl,

barred owl,

saw-whet owl,

and a falcon.

 One adaptation of the falcon is the black feathers beneath their eyes. It helps to reduce sun glare as they hunt other birds in flight.

We learned some interesting facts, too. For example, owls and all birds can turn their heads 180 degrees because their eyes don't move like humans' eyes do.

TRAVELIN' TEDDY BEAR

Meet Peanut, our class bear, and Marico.

This year fourth grade will study our country (and maybe the world) with a little help from our friend, Peanut. Peanut is our class teddy bear and he will travel with members of our class whenever they visit another part of our country or elsewhere in the world. Through Peanut's travels we will  learn about the regions, states and cities in our country. Peanut will tell us about the climate, landforms, tourists attractions, and much more as he visits places in the U.S.

Peanut's first trip is to Orlando, Florida! Marico and Peanut will tell us all about this city when they return.

Here is Peanut, all snug, in Marico's backpack ready for his adventure to Florida.

ELEPHANT UPDATE

Our final count of origami elephants was (drum roll please) 1302!

WOW! That is what team work, determination and positive attitudes can do.

SCIENTISTS AT WORK

SCIENTIFIC METHOD 4K has been studying the scientific method. We learned that it all begins with a problem, question or something you are wondering. Scientists have questions about how things work and use the scientific method to prove or disprove their hypothesis. We had a question about which solution would get an old penny the cleanest. We set up four solutions for our experiment to test our ideas. Then, we observed for a day to see the results. Then we analyzed our results to make a conclusion about our hypotheses.   Look at these scientists working together!

The solutions we tested were: water, water with soap, water with epsom salt and vinegar and salt.

We also watched a video that taught us the vocabulary of the scientific method.

Excellent Elephants!

Proctor School is trying to help increase awareness about endangered elephants. We are working with Mrs. DeOreo's community to make 35,000 origami elephants. If the combined total of origami elephants reaches or surpasses 35,000 we will also make a Guinness World Record.
Our class has made 463 elephants as of this posting. Stay tuned.....
