SUPER SCIENCE

We are investigating plant an animal adaptations in many ways during this unit of study. We started with phototropism and transpiration, two plant adaptations.
First we potted our plants, watered them, measured their height and weighed them.
The next day (pictured here) we weigh and measured them again.
Students saw first hand that the weight went down due to transpiration, the loss of water through the stomata on the back side of leaves.

COOL TO BE KIND

We celebrated kindness week at Proctor! 4K always strives to be kind, but this week we stepped it up a notch. There were more compliments, more reaching out, more including others, more patience and tolerance. It was lovely and we will work to keep this spirit going.

BOLD BREAKOUT EDU!

We got the chance to tackle another Breakout challenge. Breakout is an activity where students get clues to solve the code to unlock a series of locks. They need to work as a team to find solutions and persevere. BreadkoutEDU focuses on critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity~ The 4 C's. We love it!

IT'S ELECTRIC!

Why? That is the question that drives so much of what we do in 4K. We recently explored why balloons seem to magically adhere to surfaces when rubbed. We experimented with what surfaces worked better than others. We found out that as the surface is rubbed, the electrons which are positively charged, rub off on to the balloon which becomes negatively charged. Then, the opposites start attracting.

TAG YOU'RE IT!

We recently "tagged" Mrs. Salomon's class in the Proctor Poetry Tag. We memorized and then recited "Snow Toward Evening" by Melville Cain. We even made snowflakes to scatter at the end of the poem.

HOLIDAYS ACROSS AMERICA

4K was lucky enough to connect with classrooms across America by sharing holiday cards. The theme was to share our holiday traditions. We worked together to create, decorate, write, and address our holiday card for 29 other classrooms. Some of the states we sent cards to are Wisconsin, New Jersey, California, Texas and Iowa and many others. Here is a link to the full project explanation.  We will be doing a mystery skype with one of these classrooms soon.

HONORING VETERANS IN 4K

They made streamers with red and blue stars on them. They made patriotic paper chains. They created posters and flags. They cleaned and straightened up the room. Why? The students of 4K wanted to let the veterans who were coming to visit our class that they respected their service. Everyone wanted to make the veterans feel how much of an honor we thought it was to have them come to our school, so they all worked as a team to create a patriotic place!
