BOOK CLUB BOOK TRAILERS!

4K started book clubs earlier this year. First, students selected a realistic fiction book to read. Then, students who picked the same book got together once a week to discuss their reactions, questions, predictions and connections during our reading period. The students were eager to get to their book clubs each week. They really enjoyed this independent reading time.
 We wanted to do something to convince others to read these books, so when the books were completed, each group planned and created a book trailer using the i-movie app on the i-pads.

MENU MANIA!

We were invited to Team Murphy to collaborate on creating a menu for dinner complete with salad, main course, vegetables, side dishes, fruit and dessert. The students teamed up to plan a meal that met all the criteria, but was the lowest total cost. We really had to put our new decimal knowledge to work. 

LIFE CYCLE OF STUFF!

Change Is Simple returned to help us learn about the life cycle of the things we used everyday. The students learned about where, how, and by whom their products are made. Students are able to look at items in new ways: tracing a plastic lego, or t-shirt back to the oil from which it's made, and realizing the environmental impacts included in the production process. All the activities are connected to the Next Generation Science Standards.

CHANGE IS SIMPLE

The fourth graders worked with an environmental group called Change Is Simple this week. We have been studying renewable and non-renewable resources. CIS was able to bring this to life with two hands-on activities. The students got to build a working wind turbine that produced energy to power a light! Then, the students worked to measure how much energy a solar cell is able to produce in different lighting conditions.

MIDWEST MAPPING MAGIC!

As part of  4K's study the Midwest Region, we learned about many tourist attractions and historical locations in this part of our country. We became experts on just a few. Click on a location to get a guided tour.

PASSION PROJECT PRESENTATION

What is better than spending time doing something you LOVE? That is the idea behind Passion Projects. Students in 4K were given some time each week for 9 weeks to investigate ANY topic they were CURIOUS about. Along with learning more about the topic they have a high interest in, the purpose was to engage them in learning researching skills,  how to persevere and to work independently.

There was a wide range of passion topics in 4K. Topics included: "How did lacrosse start?" "Who wrote the first book?" Rollercoasters, famous artists, polar bears, cheerleading, kissing bugs, computer programming of games, and more.

The students got a chance to show their hard work off to their parents.
