WHAT IS A TILTMETER?

4K  had the chance to be volcanologists. The term volcanology is derived from the Latin word vulcan. Vulcan was the ancient Roman god of fire. A volcanologist is a geologist who studies the eruptive activity and formation of volcanoes, and their current and historic eruptions.

Volcanologists use a tool called a tiltmeter to monitor volcanoes with the hope that they will learn to predict eruptions.

4K constructed their own tiltmeters using styrofoam cups and coffee stirrers. The water level was the same in both cups, then students tipped the pans to simulate the movement of the Earth as magma surges. They observed the change in water levels.

HOUR OF CODE

The Hour of Code originated in December 2013 during Computer Science Education Week. Code.org launched the ‘Hour of Code Challenge’ online, inviting students to try and complete tutorials using Blockly, a programming language similar to Scratch. The program had huge support from influential figures – everyone from Bill Gates to President Obama got behind it, and in the end over 20 million people participated.

4K got a chance to dive into the technology world and try our hand at coding! Here is the link to continue working on the coding we started.
Take a look at us becoming computer programmers...

INCREDIBLE INVESTIGATIONS IN 4K!

We have been studying the Earth's Changing Surface and what paleontologists and geologists learn from looking closely at rocks and landforms on the Earth. 4K got a chance to test out these careers as we simulated the formation of the Grand Canyon. We also created fossils and put them in layers to understand how the layers of the Earth tell a story of Earth's history.

GENERAL HUTCHINSON VISITS

Brigadier General Paul Hutchinson is veteran who continues to serve our country. He was a pilot in the United State Air Force and is currently a commander in the New Hampshire National Guard when he is not flying planes for American Airlines. The students in 4K learned a great deal about what it means to be a veteran and specifically about Brigadier General Hutchinson's service to our country. They asked many astute questions and respectful comments.  Brigadier General Hutchinson came to 4K this week as part of Proctor's Salute to Veterans Program organized by Mrs. Feltault. Each classroom had the opportunity to meet and learn from a veteran and then the entire school came together to meet all the veterans.
Thank you again to Brigadier General Hutchinson and all who serve our country!

COZY BEAR CHAIR~STEM CHALLENGE

This was the challenge:

Your stuffed animal is uncomfortable! Can you design and build a chair that makes him happy using only paper and tape?
You will have 3 minutes to formulate a plan. You will then have exactly 10 minutes to complete the challenge.
You may use as much or as little of the kit materials as you choose.
Your structure may be as tall or as wide as you would like.
You MAY NOT attach your structure to a base such as a table or the floor.
A successful chair holds your stuffed animal above the table, floor or another surface.

4K rose to the challenge! Take a look at the teamwork and great design ideas!

SALUTING VETERANS

Today, 4K took time to think about what the saying "Freedom Isn't Free" means.

The students discussed how freedom takes great effort by our veterans. They sacrifice so much for our country and that is the price that freedom really costs. Our Thankful Thursday sign-in was about what we'd say to veteran if we could.....

DASH!

This year, DASH taught us all about multiple intelligences and learning differences. The first session allowed children to discover their learning preferences and strengths. Our second session, the students of 4K engaged in a variety of activities that simulated what children with a learning difference may experience when they do everyday learning tasks. The class gained an understanding of how some children may struggle with tasks they find easy. This hopefully leads to empathy for others and what they go through.

DARING TO DREAM BIG!!

4K wanted to do something special to showcase our understanding of the school's theme of Dream Big. We wrote a skit that showed how many important people in history dared to dream big and improved the world! The class also worked together on creating props for their skit at CLIC. This project allowed us to collaborate, be creative, problem solve and, of course, DREAM BIG!

Thanks to a parent who recorded this event we have some videos to remember this special 4K memory. The sound is a bit low so turn up the volume.

TOTALLY TOPOGRAPHICAL!

Studying landforms and the ever-changing Earth's surface, led us to  wonder how cartographers show different elevations on maps. We looked at relief maps and topographic maps. Then, we constructed our own landform designs and created topographic maps with contour lines. We created the contour lines by slicing the clay landforms with some dental floss in 1 centimeter segments and then tracing them on the graph paper. Most exciting of all, was having the class try to identify which map corresponded with which landform. WE DID IT!!
